DOT Hazmat 49 CFR 172.704
This comprehensive Hazmat Employee training course was developed in compliance with the US Department of Transportation’s requirements in 49 CFR 172.704. This in-person, or live virtual training course covers the essentials for any employee who in the course of their employment affects the transportation of hazardous materials by ground (including rail). This course spells out the duties and responsibilities of these employees by in-depth coverage of four critical areas. (1) General awareness/familiarization training. Topics direct the student to an overall understanding of the scope of the regulation including the definition of hazardous materials and rules for labeling, marking, placarding, packaging and shipping papers. (2) Function-specific training. The purpose of this training topic is to ensure in-depth knowledge of the specific portions of the regulation that apply to the employee’s job. This is best accomplished through an in-person company specific on-site training class; however, the instructor will make every effort to address issues of each specific training attendee.(3) Safety Training. Each hazmat employee will receive a thorough understanding of DOT’s incident response and reporting requirements. This will include how to use the 2020 Emergency Response Guidebook or SDS’s and their use with shipping papers as well as the use of emergency response organizations as a substitute for in-house response personnel. And (4) Security awareness training. Each student will be instructed in the methods designed to aid transportation safety/security. The student will be taught how to recognize and respond appropriately to possible security threats. New hazmat employees must be trained in these requirements within 90 days following employment.
